The giants, though hardly anything more than animals now, still cling to whatever remains of the essence that sustained them for so long. Fast forward to Dark Souls 2: they are unrecognizeable as their former selves, and so ancient that nobody remembers their true past. They are still beings of great power, but they are brutal and uncivilized. ![]() They lost their 'humanity' in essence, and became animalistic. Maybe without the fire, instead of dying, they simply began to lose themselves. The gods needed the fire, but maybe they could survive without it. Why? The fire was important, but we don't know what happens without it, just that it's bad for the gods and good for humans. The dark meant it was pretty much over for the age of gods i.e. What really happened once the Chosen undead decided to usher in the age of dark? (just as a refresher, either ending of Dark Souls eventually led to the age of darkness since humans seem to be running things in DS2.) After all, the timeline in Dark Souls 1 isn't even long enough to give any idea as to what happens to these being after thousands of years. Maybe the giants in Dark Souls 2 are actually the hollowed remnants of the demi-god generation. Pretty much anyone leftover from, the Age of Fire, let's just call it the demi-god generation is huge. It seems like many of the ancient, god-likes were huge in Dark Souls. It's like the city was built for gigantic people. I haven't bothered to see if anyone else has come up with this theory, and of course it's for the fun of speculation, but: ![]() If it's the latter, well that makes the giants quite a bit more mysterious. Unless of course, whatever Vendrick stole from the giants is the cause of his and the other's gigantic size and without it the giants really are giant. Pretty much everything is big, so the term giant seems somewhat inapproriate for describing a race of creatures that was about as big as everything else in the world. Besides the "special" giants in the game (king, last giant, the warrior giants), pretty much all of them are knee knockers compared to King Vendrick, the queen, Velstadt, etc.
